A certain man shot a bow at a venture.
2 Chronicles 18:33 (KJV) And a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king of Israel between the joints of the harness: therefore he said to his chariot man, Turn thine hand, that thou mayest carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
Ahab was a fool. He chose to despise God’s word and sound doctrine for fables. He didn’t think of the fatal consequences because he believed he was an expert warrior and knew how to disguise himself in the battle and slip out. He was a fool because he believed in chance and luck, and that by one way or the other he could elude God and escape judgment.
But a certain man drew a bow at a venture! The arrow did not hit a civilian nor any soldier but Ahab!
This is a warning to you my reader. When men think they can by chance, by one way or the other, escape God’s judgment, then God directs and controls all chance and luck to bring them into the same judgment. You cannot despise God’s laws and go unpunished. Those who despise sound doctrine for fables and visions from deluded prophets soon fall into God’s judgment.
What does it mean that a certain man drew a bow at a venture? It means he did it without any intention to get at Ahab. He shot the arrow without a purpose but the Lord had a purpose.
The arrow was the judgment the Lord had warned through the mouth of Micaiah the prophet. Ahab imprisoned him for speaking sound doctrine from Jehovah. He disguised himself as a common civilian but the Lord disguised the arrow of judgment and sent it after him and he died.
Reader, you cannot get out of God’s judgment no matter how you disguise your disobedience and transgression against God’s word; no matter the expert you are. The wages of sin is death, and death comes in many disguised forms at any time to take you unaware: a certain nurse at a venture may inject you with the wrong drugs; a certain drunk driver on the steering may steer the truck at a venture and run over you; a certain careless police officer may pull the trigger at a venture at you! God’s judgment can come in any form but one thing is certain – it will hit the transgressor.
But you can escape wrath today by repentance. Not the Antinomian repentance that is merely a change of mind. Arthur Pink defined true repentance as throwing down the weapons of your warfare against God and bowing to him as Lord and Saviour. Do not listen to those “Word of Faith” prophets who speak to you smooth things. They are God’s judgment upon a truth- rejecting generation. They it was you prophesied lies to Ahab and sent him to an early grave and a burning hell (See 2 Chronicles 18:1-33). I was one of them but the Lord forgave me and saved me, and has now commanded me to speak sound doctrine to his people who will listen.
One mark of a false prophet is “smooth words.” The bible says “By good words and fair speeches they will deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17,18). Four hundred prophets, by good words, fair speeches, and sound bite deceived foolish Ahab. Only one preacher was bold enough to declare to him sound doctrine, but he was despised, punished and imprisoned.
Men who preach sound doctrine are few in every generation. They are one against a multitude of heretics, but men do not listen to them. Only those who are of God hear them.
Which religion has the largest number of professors today? The Charismatic and the Word of Faith religion, of course. God has never been in the majority. Only few gather around him because he chooses the weak things of this world, and the base things of this world to confound the wise and the honourable things. Yea, that which is highly exalted among men is an abomination before God. God chooses the few to judge and overthrow the majority.
Do you know that God has ordained that his church be the pillar and ground of truth (See 1 Timothy 3:15)? Do you love simple bible preaching than motivational sound-bite prophecies and religious entertainment?
Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
Romans 16:17-18,20 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen
